Halbach Array

The Halbach Array is a special arrangement of magnets. It concentrates and thus significantly strengthens the magnetic field on one side of the array (about 1.4 times stronger compared to a single magnet of the same size), while the field strength on the opposite side is cancelled to nearly zero. This characteristic enables the Halbach array to generate a larger magnetic field in the target region with a given volume, or to acquire a given magnetic field with a smaller volume.

Similar to electromagnets, Halbach Arrays can generate strong, consistent magnetic fields over a wide range. However, Halbach Arrays don’t need extra power, cooling, or maintenance, which are all necessary for electromagnets.

EPI Magnets’ expertise in Halbach Array helps our customers to rapidly complete design & proof-of-concept, and quickly finish products at a low cost. For more than 20 years, EPI Magnets has been the leading custom Halbach Array assemblies manufacturer and solution provider in the industrial and scientific fields. We are experts in the development, production, and installation of multi-segmented Planar type and Circular type Halbach Array assemblies, offering multi-pole Halbach Array assemblies with strong magnetic fields and excellent uniformity.

Product Details

Based on geometry, Halbach Arrays are classified as Planar (liner) type and Circular type.

Planar (liner) Halbach Array is a linear configuration of multiple rectangular permanent magnets with various magnetization orientations arranged in a regular pattern. With such an arrangement, you can mount them on a ferromagnetic backplane or yoke, which helps to concentrate the magnetic field on one side of the array and creating a consistent and powerful half-sine magnetic field.

Magnetic Field of Planar Halbach Array

The Planar (liner) Halbach Array is often used in following applications:

  • Holding and fixturing. Such as refrigerator stickers
  • Linear motors
  • High energy physics fields. Such as particle accelerators, free-electron lasers, synchrotron radiation facilities, and magnetic lenses

Circular Halbach Array is a combination of arc-type permanent magnets in a certain pattern. It concentrates the magnetic field on the ID or OD of the circular array while reducing the magnetic field of the opposite side to almost zero at the same time.

Circular Halbach Array Applications:

  • Rotors of DC Motor/Servo Motor
  • Rotors of Magnetic Coupling
  • Rotors of Power Generator

Other Halbach type magnetic assemblies

Further to the Planar(liner) & Circular Halbach Array, our customers often require more complex Halbach Arrays, which are used in various complex magnetic assemblies to generate extremely high magnetic field strengths and homogeneity. These intricate and precise Halbach type magnetic assemblies are most commonly used in high precision scientific and industrial applications.

EPI Magnets expertise in Magnetic assemblies allows us to handle the toughest magnetic tasks. You can ask for the simplest or most complicated magnet demands, and we will provide precisely what you need.

The things you need to take into consideration when designing Halbach Array

Gap

  • For Planer (liner) type: Gap between the Halbach Array and the workpiece.
  • For Circular type: required gap in the inner diameter.
  • For Halbach type permanent magnet motor: gap between the rotor and the stator.

Operating Environment

  • The temperature that the Halbach Array will be exposed.
  • Mediums that the Halbach Array will be exposed.
  • Rotational speeds if the magnetic assembly you need is a Halbach type Rotor.

External Demagnetizing Fields

  • Particularly crucial for Halbach type Rotors

Volume

  • The limitation of Halbach Array in the size.
  • The details of the size for the devises that the Halbach Array will be fit within.
